Age 10-11 transition from elementary to middle school. Age 13-14 transition from middle school to high school. Top-dog phenomenon moving from higher rank in social status (in late elementary) to lower social status (beginning of high school). Transition to junior high school linked to: self esteem, gpa. Educational performance: gpa, school engagement, academic motivation, self-concept of academic ability. Mental health: self-concept of social ability, but less lonely, less depressed, mixed results for self-esteem, self-worth. Protective factors: parent involvement, authoritative parenting, teacher support, school belonging, social support from peers. According to national education association students worry about: homework, lockers, being bullied by older kids. Impressions formed from statements from elementary teachers, older siblings, and neighbors.
