Idealists also stressed freedom and democracy: third war, four freedom"s, importance of great power politics (realist idea, great powers should manage world order within their spheres of influence, four policemen) Un security council (has 4 in it) Realists would say individual nations need national security goals met, temporary alliances to achieve a balance of power. Belief that many nations have common interests and we can create an international system that upholds collective security. Int security implies a liberal view: community of nations, common interests worth protecting, human security. Idealism: asking us to consider security not from a state center view, or a community of states. Rather a new model that security of individuals is protected. Groups are not secured, then the world cannot be secured.
