Meccan - basic dogmas, basic moral principles and ethics, cosmology, prophet stories. Medinan - concrete and specific rules on how to live (sharia), addressing specific problems the community was facing, more specific critique of jewish and christian theology/scripture. Muhammad has scribes record verses and people specifically to memorize/teach/recite the verses. Writing is complicated by the arabic defective script. Umar was very concerned about the quran. Goes to zayd and complies the quran.
