KIN 312M Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Late Bloomer, Think Small, Palpation
Day 8 5/10/16: Ch 4 Health
Problem - Kids are leaving sports
● 2.6 Million fewer kids playing these sports alone in the past 5 years
○ All sports not just football (basketball, soccer, track/field, baseball, football,
softball)
● Why? - competitive structure and emphasis on early specialization
○ Sports cost lots of money now (impacts participation rate)
● Model is broken (pyramid model)
○ Tons of people play when young then at each ‘jump’ up people are weeded out
for different reasons (disability, average ability, low income, injury, late bloomer)
○ Push out kids who want to play
● Solution: Sport for all, play for life (square model)
○ Produce athletes for life
○ Mostly rectatinal with some competitive and a few elite, and all having physical
literacy
■ Teach people building blocks of movement
Small Changes - Big Impact
● Ask kids what they want/fun: social bonds and access to the action
○ Fun: trying your best, coach with respect, playing time
○ Less Fun: Winning, tournaments, medals/trophies
● Reintroduce Free Play, some barriers are...
○ Single or dual working parents: without supervision it's easy to tell kids to stay at
home after school
○ Professionalization of parthood: culture pressure on parents to create super
achieving kids
○ Impact of standardized testing mandates: federal law promoting academic skills
let to cuts to PE/recess
○ Competition for college admissions: pickup hoops doesn’t build a student’s
resume wo why invest time/resources?
● Encourage Sport Sampling: benefits of sampling a variety of sports → it's better to try a
few than to focus on one early
○ Opposite of early specialization
○ More options mean more kids will find a sport they like
○ Play sports longer throughout life
● Revitalize in Town leagues: income impacs sport palpation
○ Percentage of core participant by household income
○ Club/travel model excludes those without the funds
● Think Small: more fun with less space
○ Don’t use full courts for full games with adult rules
○ Games that build skills and involve more people in the same amount of space
■ Especially in urban settings
● Design for Development: Design for Development
