April 1, 2016: why has shell become the subject of criticism and controversy? (required) Shell has become a subject of criticism because of the way they have been treating the environment and those that speak out about it. In regards to the vocal critic ken saro-wiwa, he was an innocent man that was put to death because shell did not bother learning what it was that their company was actually doing. Since they did not take the initiative in figuring out the effects of their actions, they came under harsh criticism from many people. When shell began drilling and getting oil in nigeria, they encountered much protest from the local people and environmentalists saying that they needed to stop what they were doing otherwise they would destroy the land. However, instead of taking this into account, shell continued to drill with the backing of the nigerian government that were spending money meant for other purposes on oil and drilling.
