Fertility: the capacity of a woman to produce a normal ovum periodically and of a man to produce normal sperm; the ability to reproduce. Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. Both underweight and overweight are associated with infertility. Overweight men have low sperm counts and hormonal changes that reduce fertility. Overweight women have disruptions in menstrual regularity and ovarian hormone production. Malnutrition reduces fertility and impairs the early development of an infant. Healthy diet includes a full array of vitamins and minerals that can favorably influence fertility. Men with diets rich in antioxidant nutrients and low in saturated fats have higher sperm numbers and motility. In order to be physically active during pregnancy, it is important to be active beforehand. Diabetes, hypertension, hiv/aids, pku, and sexually transmitted diseases can adversely affect pregnancy. Exposure to substances such as cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, or environmental contaminants can cause miscarriages or abnormalities.
