PSY 364 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Active Listening, Attention, Self-Care
Document Summary
Engaged - easier to learn (full attention) Listening for accuracy - understand what is going on, what the client is saying to you. Listening as an active way to build connections. Listening = primary tool used to build empathic understanding (therapeutic element in therapy) Basic social skills - show that you"re listening. Communicative behaviors that allow the client to feel listened to and heard. Clarification - form of a question or clarifying statement (check on something if you"re not sure you"re understanding correctly) Not a question intended to advance a person"s thinking or lead them to a different track (redirect) None is inserting anything new - perspective of the therapist isn"t incorporated yet. Be cautious to not be a repeating machine - repeat everything the other person says. Summarize a larger amount of content that the other person has given you. Frequently happens at the end of a therapy session. Listening - about trying to understand and connect.
