Document Summary

A core component of research ethics is that no one should be forced to participate: the necessity of voluntary participation hasn"t always been a thing, a lot of gray areas when talking about voluntary and involuntary participation. All participants must be aware that they are participating in a study, be informed of all the consequences, and consent to participate: share information as it comes to you. This norm, however, can conflict with the scientific need for generalizability. A lot of legal issues behind these two concepts. Includes embarrassment and other forms of psychological harm: can feel harder that it should be. The protection of participants" identities is the clearest concern in the protection of their interests and well-being in survey research. Never use the term anonymous to mean confidential. Deception is unethical, and if it is necessary it must be justified by compelling scientific or administrative concerns. Do not imply that unexpected findings were hypothesized or expected.
