S W 360K Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Iceberg, Lobotomy, Major Depressive Disorder
Document Summary
Work to know how they are doing physically, emotionally, and mentally. Tip of the iceberg is interpersonal: woman being catcalled, african american being followed around a store. Just below the surface is institutional: law enforcement stop and frisk, discriminatory laws. Still deeper is cultural: postal deliveries scheduled around christian holidays. To navigate the iceberg, the people at each level need to listen. The belief oftentimes is that if you don"t work, you aren"t living a full life which is wrong. Do not make assumptions about what they can and cannot do. Use person first language: a person is suffering from something, a person is not that thing, a person who is deaf good. Intersections: access accommodations class, cultural asking for help. We as americans have been taught not to ask for help. There is a correct way to ask someone if they need help. Mental health changes are often not talked about.
