Monday, october 23, 2017 9:15 pm: scientists that study ocean life are called biological oceanographers or marine biologists, marine environment is largest habitat on the earth, at species level, oceans appear much less diverse than terrestrial environments. However, has representatives from many more phyla. Of that, vast majority inhabit benthic environment. Oceans have fewer habitats and greater environmental stability compared to land. Boundaries in this water world exist in horizontal and vertical. Include: water mass borders, changes in temperature, salinity, light, density, isolating currents. Intermediate disturbance hypothesis: species diversity is maximized when ecological disturbance is neither very rare nor very frequent, disturbances provide opportunities for natural selection to act upon populations. Another possibility we are simply missing vast majority of organisms in the ocean. Arranging related organisms into hierarchical set of groups. A naming scheme that moves from least specific to most specific group: three domains. Eukaryotes: eukarya, phylogeny - evolutionary relationships between ancestor organisms and descendants.
