Document Summary
This is relatively new, used to be picked directly by party leaders. Brought by progressive era reforms to take power away from parties. These pick delegates who then vote in the convention. Order of caucuses/primaries are not set in stone, states can choose whenever they want to hold them. Earlier ones tend to have more say in the candidates. Group people together in an area that support a candidate and count them. Aggregates people from home level to county to state. Takes a while to truly know the outcomes. Nobody going into the convention had enough delegates to be nominee. Now we pretty much know who is going to win before the convention. However, we could see a return with complex primaries. This would lead to an interesting convention again. People vote to decide on who the electors will choose. The presidential election is really 51 different elections. Before civil war, most states didn"t have a general election.
