Classification of movie by form, by content, or most likely, by both. Content = story, characters, everything that"s in it, theme, ideology. Casablanca = romance [rick and ilsa, content], drama [closeup, tension, violence] By form horror is first genre, then newsreel. Useful to look at what it"s not; comedy jokes. Classifying genre narrative technique [storytelling], means/methods of production of movie [set], means of marketing movie. Western expectations; gunfights, horse riding, action, sheriff, western town, good guys and bad guys, indians, texas, damsel in distress, harlot [whorehouse, archetype, hooker w/ heart of gold], saloons barfight. From images you expect, you compare movie to what you expect you"ve seen or expect. Film noir romance and action are part of it, mystery, detectives, and suspense. Detective = main role, ethics or morality, doing what"s right because it"s right. Darkest side of human effort and what people do to each other, cynicism. Studios known for genre i. e warner bros = musicals [jazz singer]
