Emotion- brief, acute, changes in conscious experience and physiology that occur in response to a personally meaningful situation. Increase chances of survival: formation of intimate relationships, broadens our thinking and behavior. Mood- affective states that affect the likelihood of further emotional responses, tend to be longer than most emotions. Affective traits- stable predispositions towards certain types of emotional responses, such as anger. Basic/common set of emotions to all humans: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise. Self conscious emotions: occur as a function of how well we live up to the expectations set by selves, society, and others- embarrassment, guilt, humiliation, pride, shame. Frederickson"s broaden and build model: positive emotions widen cognitive perspective and help us acquire useful skills, negative emotions narrow our focus. People regulate/modify emotions via cognitive/behavioral efforts like reappraisal and expressive- suppression. Pre-frontal cortex- options for response, regulation, and reappraisal also: anterior cingulate, hypothalamus, insula.
