GNDR 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: People V. Turner, Ender Wiggin, Victim Blaming
Document Summary
Many forces of oppression manifest in gendered violence. Patriarchal society imposes and continues violence directed towards women. Trans, minority, and further marginalized women are at higher risk for gendered violence. Domestic violence - named by feminists in 1970s. Reframed as social problem of women being battered/terrorized. From then on law enforcement got involved more often, before men were rarely arrested (women blamed heavily) In patriarchal families it was considered (by both spouses) as father"s right to enforce rules/opinions through violence on children as well as spouse. About 15% of college females report being sexually assaulted, more than half by men they"re dating. Women of color especially at risk for sexual assault. Rampant victim-blaming culture/mindset prominent throughout society that limits persecution of assaulters. Most sexual assault goes unreported, many cases the assaulter is not charged due to victims being painted as loose or she asked for it .
