Receptor Potential
o It is a graded potential
o Threshold potential graded potential large enough ti start an action potential
o How does sound etc change to an action potential
o Excitatory post synaptic potential- depolarization. How did we get there
o Inhibitory post synaptic potential-hyperpolarization-How do we get there?
Lot’s of teriology; kow the differees
Chemical classes of neurotransmitters
o Acetylcholine
Acetyl coA+ choline
Broken with: acetylcholinesterase
Cholinergic: Neuron that releases choline. Receptor that binds choline
2 receptors:
Nicotininc: Bind nicotine
Muscarinic: Binds to chemical from mushrooms
Agonist: A chemical that binds to the same receptor. Nicotine as
an agonist to acetylcholine
Binding opens up ion channel
Non-specific cation channel
Muscarinic
Use a variety of transduction mechanisms but all are going through a
protein, may be excitatory or inhibitory,
o Biogenic amines.
Catecholamines- Derived from tyrosine L-
DopaDopamineNorepinephrine
Adrenergic: Epinephrine and adrenaline are the sae thig urella
ter for ateholaies
o Alpha and Beta receptors (Adrenergic receptors)
o Beta receptors use cAMP pathway
Excitatory or inhibitory effects depending on which
cAMP is in the the sell
o Alpha receptors
Use G proteins
Can be excitatory or inhibitory in nature
Epinephrine and norephenephrine bind to the same receptor.
Both are hormones and neurotransmitter
Adrenal medulla- releases mainly epinephrine
o Monoamine oxidase breaks down norepinephrine and
epinepherine
Serotonin- NOT A CATECHOLAMINE
o Reuptake transporter
o BINDS TO PRESYNAPTIC MEMBRANE
o Moves back into cell that released it
