Cultural relativism: viewing people"s behavior from the perspective of their own culture. Socialization: lifelong process through which people learn attitudes, values, and behaviors appropriate members of a particular culture. Humans born extremely vulnerable and almost entirely dependent on other. Impact of isolation: missing out on early socialization can have a devastating impact. Self: sense of who we are, distinct from others, and shaped by social interactions. Preparatory stage: children imitate the people around them, especially family members. Symbol: gesture, object, or word forms the basis of human communication. Play stage: children pretend to be other people. Role taking: process of mentally assuming the perspective of other people.
