Norms and values- all societies jave ways to encourage and enforce appropriate behavior and discourage and punish appropriate behavior. Norms- established standards of behavior maintained by a society. Formal norms- generally written,specify strict punishment for violators. Informal norms- generally understood but not precisely recorded. Mores- norms deemed highly necessary to the welfare of a society(more cultural) example:incest. Folkways- norms government everyday behavior expamle: picking nose,etc. Sanctions- penalties and rewards for conduct concerning a social norm. Positive sanction- pay raises, medals,words of gratitude , pats on the back. Acceptance of norms- people do not follow norms in all situations, behaviro that appears to violate society"s norms may represents adherence to a particular group"s norms.
