Social evolution and evolution as a process of selection. Key figures and their ideas: franz boas, clemence royer (worked with darwin, william willis. De-linked race, language, and culture, making arguments that people and cultures do not go from savage, barbarian, to civilized. Americans think of the term culture, we often think of it in terms of being cultures as opposed to culture, which implies higher or lower: sarah blaffer hrdy. Clemence royer insisted that women are active agents of human evolution, in large part by controlling and planning their reproduction. Women strive to take charge of their own bodies. Historical context: manifest destiny- europeans were chosen by god to civilize all of north. America; after end of civil war; lots of anxiety about black people being in. Non-material- matter does not have self-organizing properties: element of time- introduction of idea that things can change (the time of modernization) Over time, people who are traditional become modern.
