Xiaoping became de facto leader: younger. Rose in ranks because of cr and put up by the older leaders of the cr: con ict between the two groups = huge. Obscure, idealogical campaigns unknown to the public: people had to try to read between the lines in newspapers to see who"s on top, who"s in what position, etc, very bizarre and ambiguouss. Both sides represented thousands of lower and middle level cadres: mao very ill by now.
