Despite this shift, the two unresolved problems of the johnson administration persisted; the american commitment in vietnam and how to get out of it without appearing to have been defeated ( peace with honor nixon would say). A second was the persisting racial divide in the country. Then came watergate ruining the presidency and significant achievement in foreign policy. The presidency did not recover under ford or carter: the republicans took the lead, the 1968 election, alabama governor george wallace. Got 13% of vote: great society liberalism of hubert humphrey. Election would have been a landslide for nixon if not for the 3rd party candidate who split the republican party. South abandoned the democratic party when johnson created the civil. Needed to get out the war without seeming like we lost.
