Academies under great criticism under this period (of jacksonian egalitarianism: fear they will create a military aristocracy, congress stood firm in their support west point grads increasingly important in army. 1817 25% from wp; grows to 75% (influence seen in mexico, basically in charge of all in civil war) Sweeping drama of apposition and settlement: explorers: lewis and clark, zebulon pike (colorado), john c. fremont (sierras, etc. Mapped the west, flora and fauna, mapped the natives as well. Army assisted in public works: west point people built bridges, canals, etc. Army posts great economic booms to the areas surrounding them.
