Washington hated the militia"s: he couldn"t rely on them at all, afraid, and untrained. Constantly had to replace his dead soldiers with militia men. Kept a long diary of what happened. Most men were not educated in the army not a surprise that he wrote the only book out there. As the war progressed, the enlisters gradually decreased in education levels: commitment increased, and eventually only desperate, poor individuals enlisted. Terrible draft system: anyone who can afford it pays their way out. Buys a substitute to go in their stead: recruiting officers would often go to jails. Either give them a choice, some just were commuted: captured loyalists hung or serve in the ca, result, great mix of peoples. Testament to these groups of men to bond and fight for each other. There was a sense of a higher cause: men in the ca were sacrificing more for it than anyone else.
