Document Summary
Black skin, white masks (1952), and the wretched of the earth (1961) are early classics of late- and post-colonial literature. Poster child of upper middle class life. Grew up with relative wealth in a household that was assimilated to french culture. Fanon uses marxist theory, psychology, critical race theory, and global political economy in order to give an account of the colonized subject, the problem of nationalism, and the path to liberation. He argued that the ideological basis of colonialism was and is racist/white supremacy. Must be worn in order to succeed/function. Assimilated to the white values and european ways of thinking. Work on the subjectivity of the colonized person. Repressive state apparatus: army, police, etc. (12) Ideological state apparatus: school, church, media, etc. (12) We feed ourselves the idea that the american dream is the promise that we live by. We are fooled by our own values and many of the values that we have inherited are highly destructive.
