Twelve shi"ism, large following in iran: not all iranians are twelver. Twelver believe that the world was in a constant state of decline, sign that. They thought this decline led to their domination of the world by western powers: god was punishing them with non muslim domination. 1960"s the white revolution: the shahs effort to modernize iran through industrialization education, work wit the us. Chief criticism what was happening under the shah only benefitted a few (the wealthy) The ulam had fallen into complacency forget they were protectors of iran. Importance of justice: shariati and others thought there was gross injustice occurring. Ayatollah khomeini: exiled by shah in 1960"s, cassettes/books so people could hear his teachings, people gathered in the mosque and heard his teachings, lead to the iranian revolution, condemns western imperialism. Israel and us are paired as symbols of the west.
