The study of religion: the blind men and the elephant. If you put a bunch of blind men around an elephant and ask them what they feel, they"ll grab onto diff parts (nose, tusk, tail) and say diff things (snake, stake, rope: the pizza effect. Describes when you get involved w/ something foreign that you don"t really know about. Pizza was started in italy, but was thought of as a proper art form in america. It wasn"t that huge in italy back then. Something foreign is thought of as prejudiced b/c you have some preconceptions about it: if people are: rationalistic, pragmatic, self-reliance, individualism, anti- formalism, anti-ritualism, anti-heirarchy, anti-cynicism, and/or iconoclastic, it could lead to religious issues and bigotry. Introduction to buddhism: buddha (it"s a title, not a name) the awakened one, the buddha buddha shakyamuni (566 486 bce) Muni means sage : the religion began as part of a large movement of renunciants.
