SOC 2230 Lecture 11: Differential Action Theory
Document Summary
Mechanistic/situational: describe crime as happening spontaneously, happens due to the individuals" immediate circumstance, eg. The development of criminal behaviour is a longer term process. Historical/genetic theory concludes: explained in terms of things in which that person was exposed at an earlier point in time. Propositional theory: concise statement, how things happen, describe relationships between different variables, 9 propositions from sutherland. Deductive theory: some big statement is made then the statement is unpacked, what are the implications of this big statement, another statement is made has certain implications, etc. etc. etc. Propositions: criminal behaviour is learned a. b. In order for a person to commit a crime, he has to learn it. It"s not invented individually by each individual, you have to learn it: criminal behaviour is learned in interaction with other persons in a process of communication, crime is learned in really subtle ways.
