Biostatistics = application of stats to biology. Descriptive statistics = organizing, summarizing, and presenting data. Population = all subjects or items of interest. Inferential statistics = drawing conclusions about a phenomenon on the basis of data. Parameter = number that describes characteristic of population. Statistic = number that describes characteristic of sample. Observed value of a statistic can estimate the unobserved value of a parameter. Variable = property that characterizes an individual. Individuals = objects described in a set of data. Quantitative = quantity assessed or measured for each individual. Categorical = some characteristic describing each individual. Histogram = summary graph for a single variable. Bar graph is used to describe categorical variables. Dot plots = graph in which each data value is plotted as a point along a scale of values. Stem-and-leaf plots = represents data by separating each value into two parts. Sum of values divided by the number of values.
