Describe the organization of the respiratory system. Describe the structure of a pulmonary lobule, and the functional anatomy of the alveoli. Explain the important structural features of the respiratory system. Define and compare the process of external respiration and internal respiration. Summarize the physical principles governing the movement of air into the lungs and the diffusion of gases into and out of the blood. Describe how oxygen and carbon dioxide are picked up, transported, and released in the blood. Describe how oxygen relates to the respiratory system: Oxygen is obtained from the air by diffusion across the delicate exchange surfaces of the lungs. It is carried to cells by the cardiovascular system which also returns carbon dioxide to the lungs. Provides a gas exchange surface area between air and circulating blood.
