NFS 223 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Surgeon General Of The United States, Infant Formula, Nutrient Density
Document Summary
Feedings may need to be adapted for nutrient density if feeding volume is altered. Breastfeeding has been shown to have positive nutrition outcomes for both infant and mother: a breastfed child will consume as much as they want, a bottle can override those satiation feelings. Energy requirements differ in toddlers and children based on differences on growth rates and activity levels. Parents need to be good role models: encourage and empower parents to think about the messages they have about their food norms, parents should follow their own rules, has a strong influence and impact. Tailor counseling to support cultural norms but also bring in ideas to have foods to be nutritionally-dense. Eat at day care programs: headstart, ask questions about what is allowed/served. Mypyramid and now myplate for kids is a guide/suggestion: will not list exact serving size, just a depiction, counsel on what size the plates are, the portion sizes.
