Document Summary
Drugs a chemical substance used for its effects on bodily process. Psychoactive drugs drugs that alter mood, thought processed, and/or behavior, or are used in the treatment of mental disorders. Desired (therapeutic effects) and undesired changes (side effects) Special effects effects determined by interactions with a target site. Non-specific effects effects no caused by targeted interactions: ex. Pharmacokinetics what the body does to the drugs. Pharmacodynamics what drugs do to the body. Subcutaneous: just under the skin, slow/even absorption, can inject pellets that last a long time. Intraperitoneal: into the gut cavity, fairly rapid. Time course depends on the drugs, must be soluble in the stomach and resistant to acid degradation (insulin) Inhalation: surface area of absorption is very large in the lungs, fast. Topical: mucous membranes, 15-20 minutes, transdermal for lipid soluble drugs. Lipid solubility defined by partition coefficient, which is the solubility of the drug in oil/solubility of the drug in water.
