Religious ritual promotes solidarity: brings people together, opposite of marx. The community worships itself through religion: take on rituals, you come to a religious service and you are there because you worship a god, what people are really worshipping is the community, solidarity, the sense of community. Modern life threatens religion: religion was on the decline towards the early 20th century, rural life was less and less common, anomie, modern life is the demise of religion over time. What was the basis of capitalism: free labor, not slavery, not feudalism, free market, not political, not irrationally speculative, separation of business from household, business is its own entity, earn wages that support the households, rational bookkeeping. If you want to have a successful business, you need to have a good accounting system. Important aspect of maintain a viable business: an economic ethos originating in ascetic protestantism. It showed that you were a hard worker.
