Us incarcerates more people than any other nation: russia is second. Privatization of prison system in the us: for profit industry, more prisoners = more profit. Since 1980, the us prison population has quadrupled: 1 of 99 american adults is in prison increase in prison population tied to mandatory sentencing laws and longer sentences. War on drugs has left to increase in convictions for nonviolent drug offenders (12-fold increase since 1980) National crime rate and percentage change violent crime: murder, rape, robbery, assault. Property crime: burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft crime has declined in the us since the 1990s, media portrayal states the opposite. Not all crime is reported subject to political swings. Media portrays terrorism to be the mass source of shootings.
