A prisoner of war is a person, whether combatant or non-combatant, who is held in custody by a belligerent power during or immediately after an armed conflict. Prohibited: violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture, taking of hostages, and outrages upon personal dignity, in particular, humiliating and degrading treatment. No human being may be subjected to torture or cruel/inhuman/degrading treatment or punishment.
