Parasites cause pathology and mortality often horrifying! Parasites may make up over 50% of the organisms on earth. Lots of organisms out there, and they all have parasites. Viruses are very efficient parasites, and have huge effects on individual organisms. Viruses are polyphyletic, and have more homology to the genes of their hosts than to those of other viruses. Small groups of viruses have a common ancestor, creating families and orders. Viruses are selfish replicators that use host machinery to produce progeny viruses. Using viruses to slow down insect invaders. Virus then replicates and turns caterpillar into a (cid:498)soup of virus particles(cid:499) that. Inserts a gene in to the dna of gypsy moth that causes the caterpillar to migrate upward in tree rain down to infect other caterpillars in the tree. 3 billion years of bacterial diversification has produced many parasites: Parasitic bacteria have evolved lots of individual times.
