Western ideals and philosophies, especially christianity"s control over societal psyche that dominated the world. Instead of bringing growth and a better life, it has provided tools for war and destruction. People are despaired and anxious because the center is not strong because of war. Modernist recognition that the collective ideal is fragmented. Modernists take fragments and build their own structure. Most popular between 1830 - 1863 (up until end of civil war) Depicted images of everyday urban and rural life. Genre art appealed to viewer"s ability to see themselves in recognizable scenes and activities. People saw genre art as escapist art that was based in sentimentalism. Genre painting portraying nostalgia and childhood is a response to industrialization, crowded urban life, and child labor in mines. Black people represented in genre painting to look back at the center .
