Academy artists dominated salon juries and received most major public commissions: alexandre cabanel, the birth of venus, c. 1864. Depicts the goddess venus being born of sea. I(cid:374)(cid:272)redi(cid:271)le detail i(cid:374) hair a(cid:374)d o(cid:272)ea(cid:374)"s (cid:449)a(cid:448)es; a(cid:374)gels a(cid:271)o(cid:448)e. Style was interested in big subjects (classical antiquity, biblical) Possibly erotic; lots of nudity in academic art. Artists represented the subject matter of everyday life --especially subjects that previously had been considered to be too (cid:862)lo(cid:449)(cid:863) for the (cid:862)high(cid:863) art of painting. Realism was influenced by the advent of photography: gustave courbet, the stone breakers, 1849. Captured in a forward way; a younger and older man are breaking the stones apart. Not idealizing the scene; could actually be witnessed. Lots of browns and grays: gustave courbet, burial at ornans, 1849.
