Communication theory: theories dealing with communication process. Research- we arrive at theories by doing research. Communication research: qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative- description, interview, participant observation as data. Communication event: can be more than two people includes intended and unintended audiences. A lot of things happening at the same time. Style, content and form are all part of the message. Broadcasting (1920s-2000s): communicating single message to many people at once. Narrowcasting (2010s on): messages targeting specific, smaller groups.
