Class on oct 11th robustness, scalability, performance switch decides how and when it has to send a packet to a common destination. Antennas are used to send/receive packets: really hard to listen and transmit, carrier sense is weaker, wireless is not a perfect broadcast medium. B reaches a and c. c reaches b and d. d can reach only c. this is an adhoc configuration (the other case is that there is a base station that mediates) If a sends to b, c is going to be unaware that a is transmitting. So c will send any time it wants to b, regardless of whetehr a is transmitting or not to b. (csma / cd environment). But c does not send to d as it senses transmissions from b. Any node that receives the rts but not the cts knows that they are not close enough to interfere with the communication.
