Beliefs or attitudes (i"m not a worthy person) Give advice, provide consultation: counsel, counseling, nature of interviewee goals: Does the client trust the counselor: therapist credibility. Does the counselor communicate in a way that says expert? : meaning-making. Does it lend explanation or understanding for the client: listening actively. Common to all approaches: differs in what is listened to. Important to counseling outcome: common factors approach, basic attending skills. Reflecting content: levels of listening, hearing, pseudo-listening, enjoyment, remembering, comprehension. Meta-communication: deeper, subtle meaning, active, involved process, active listening.
