Instrumental: nasometer: measures acoustic energy emitted through nose/mouth during speech, nasalance score = magnitude of nasality, multi-view videofluoroscorpy: motion picture x-rays during speech. Intervention: can be behavioral, surgical, psychological, medical, or any combination. If voice treatment is primary treatment: restore healthy vocal tissue, regain full voice function, establish good vocal habits. Intervention for medical/physical conditions: focus is on achieving best voice possible, or determining alternative voicing methods. In these cases, voice is usually not the primary disability. Intervention for psychological/stress conditions: need to show the person that there is nothing physically or structurally wrong with. Embryonic development: cleft lip/palate is caused by interruption in normal processes of development before birth, clefts are normal part of embryonic development, normal development, primary palate. Causes of clefts: genetic component, environmental factors include, drugs (e. g. , cortisone, valium, dilantin, etc. , substance abuse, radiation, maternal infections and diseases, multi-factor theory, combination of genetic predisposition and environmental causes.
