Increases by 50% at one year and 75% at 2 years. Tripled at one year and quadrupled at 2 years. Head develops sooner than lower part of body. Head, chest, and trunk grow sooner than extremities. Synapses allow neurons to send messages to one another by releasing neurotransmitters. Cerebral cortex has a left and right hemisphere. Left hemisphere: processes information in a sequential, analytic way. Right hemisphere: processes information in a holistic, integrative matter. Areas are not yet committed to one function. Allows another part of brain to take over a function if a part is damaged. Children raised in socially and physically stimulating environments show better brain/cognitive development. Rapid improvement in vision if corrected within 4-6 months. The longer you wait, the higher the severity of impairment in vision skills. Those adopted before 6 months caught up in cognitive skills. Those adopted after 6 months showed intellectual deficits and mental health problems.
