Reverse causation when the correlation between two things is due not to the first thing causing the second, but the reverse. Spurious causation when the correlation between two things is due to the fact that each of them is correlated with some third factor. By the 2000"s there was a decline in adolescents devoting time to work. Kids shouldn"t be too busy, nor spend too much time on one thing; but they should be kept busy with enough to do. Younger teens: informal jobs-babysitting and yard work. Older teens-formal jobs-employed in the retail and service industries. Skills learned in school rarely used at work. Most people believe that working helps teens. Premature affluence: can"t sustain the level of discretionary spending once they must pay for necessities. Consequences: increased cynicism about the value of hard work, interest in buying drugs and alcohol, tendency to develop more materialistic attitudes, less satisfied with earnings as young adults.
