Document Summary

Adolescents don"t generally develop serious psychosocial or social problems. Problems during adolescence are not biologically rooted or caused by the normative changes of adolescence. Ex. raging hormones causing crazy behaviors aren"t supported scientifically. Depression isn"t just part of growing up it"s a sign that something is wrong. Anxiety and behavior related issues start as early as four and continue and grow. Mood disorders are less prevalent until you get around 11-18. Substance abuse doesn"t become an issue until around age 14-18. Substance abuse: the maladaptive use of drugs (legal and illegal). Internalizing disorders: problems are turned inward (emotional and cognitive distress). Externalizing disorders: problems are turned outward (behavioral problems). Substance abuse problems are likely comorbid , co-occurring/ more than one problem at the same time. Many adolescents with psychosocial problems have more than one type of problem at once. The comorbidity of externalizing and substance abuse problems has led researchers to propose theoretical explanations of this phenomenon.
