*lithosphere - crust and small layer of mantle together. *asthenosphere - the weak layer, allows layers to slip. Rigid plates that move and are essential to plate tectonics. *passive margin - just being pushed along - a place where nothing is really going on. *active margin - a place where there is a lot of tectonic activity. Chapter 3: earth materials: to unravel the history of the deep and surficial earth systems we study rocks. *minerals - 4 characteristics something needs to have in order to be classified as a mineral: naturally occurring, inorganic materials, with a crystalline structure, a characteristic chemical composition. *the atom: the basic unit of a chemical element, which has 3 parts: proton - has a positive charge, neutron - has no charge, electron - has a negative charge. Examples: hydrogen has one proton, oxygen with 8 protons, silicon has 14 protons, iron has 26 protons.
