What is Life?
Simplest Definition & critical components:
1. Self replication and 2. Self regulation (“homeostasis” - regulate environment)
Cells are the basic unit of life:
*Prokaryotic Cell - “free floating” DNA
- No nucleus
- No organelles
- First cell discovered
- “Pro” = before and “karyote” = kernel
*Eukaryotic Cell - what humans are made of Lecture Slideshow Slide #13 (for both images)
- More complex cells
- DNA in nucleus
- Contains organelles that perform
different functions
How do we categorize life forms?
Method:
*Phenetics - classify organisms based on
overall similarity
Ex. comparing a shark and a goldfish
→ Phenetics fails sometimes
Ex. Dolphin and Great White Shark → because dolphin is a mammal and great white shark is not
