The Hydrologic Cycle

Review:
*Fossil Fuels - a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains
of living organisms
→ Greenhouse gases are contributing to global warming because they trap more of the Sun's
energy in the Earth's atmosphere (This smoke is a greenhouse gas)
→ Our dependence on burning fossil fuels, and releasing the carbon stored in them, means we
have been adding a lot more carbon dioxide to the air
*The Hydrologic Cycle - the sequence of conditions through which water passes from vapor in
the atmosphere through precipitation on land or water surfaces and ultimately back into the
atmosphere as a result of evaporation and transpiration
*Precipitation - any form of water that falls from
clouds and reaches the Earth’s surface
*Evaporation - the process of turning from liquid
into vapor
*Condensation - molecules of water vapor in the
air become liquid water
*Transpiration - water released into the
atmosphere directly from the leaves of trees and
plants

*The science of hydrology studies how water moves around and within Earth’s surface.
→ including drought, floods, groundwater, and the availability of clean drinking water.
