Astronauts who escaped the system needed to be killed at the end because soviets never had technology to go to the moon. Omon escapes his execution by luck-- all the other cosmonauts were killed. He thinks he"s dying from lack of oxygen after his pistol misfires but he ends up waking up. There are hints earlier on when omon describes what he sees through his window. The earth looked like a large school globe -- imitating the earth. Earth resembles a model of globe instead of a real life earth. Omon remembers urchagrin"s words, the disabled flight trainer. He recalls this when he figures out the truth and is hiding from people chasing him to kill him.
