Document Summary

How does this affect the relative importance of instrumental and vocal music. Instrumental music could do more than support the words and their message. Music could comment on the words and even show them not to be entirely truthful. Instrumental music could also convey a sense of ambiguity. The music was at least as important as the text itself. Instrumental music started to become as important as vocal music: look over the picture on p. 415 of hanning, and compare it with what you know of c. p. e. Composers are better known today for their instrumental music. Beethoven had carried the torch in a sense. He started a new era while finishing the previous one and had composed in a wide range of music.
