Document Summary

Physics 109 - lecture 7 - pipes (2) (9/28/16) Open pipe - open at both ends. Closed pipe - closed at one end. Closed pipe and open pipe with same length have different modes. The fundamental of a open pipe is 2 times the size of the pipe. Pressure node at one end and antinode at other. Can do this if the tube length is equal to a quarter of a wavelength. 1 = l 1 = 4l. For a fundamental mode, closed pipe should have 0 pressure at open end and maximum pressure at closed end. Half of open pipe fundamental mode is fundamental mode of closed pipe. When a pressure wave travels 2l (round trip) in a closed pipe, it has only gone half of its period. The fundamental of a closed pipe is 4 times the size of the pipe.
