Discussion of Sack’s Cases
Hands: Madeline
Madeline has a phrase for her hands, she calls them, “God forsaken lumps of dough.” She
feels her hands are helpless and useless.
Madeline has cerebral palsy.
She has sensation in her hands, but doesn’t have a lot of experience in using her sense of
hands.
Has sense of touch but doesn’t have a lot of experience using them, because her parents
did everything for her. She didn’t use her senses very well.
Used operant conditioning to help shape her to use her hands
Didn’t feed her, but put the food close to her
She figured out how to get the food and she learned how to use her hands
constructively
Encouraged her further to use her hands by getting her into pottery and
clay
Witty Ticcy: Ray
His diagnosis was turrets disorder
Some actual symptoms are excessive swearing
He had verbal and motor tics
Gave him some medicine that controlled his verbal ticking and dealt with some of his
motor ticking (the medicine was Helva)
Helva was an antipsychotic medication
It competes with the dopamine in the postsynaptic receptor sites
Blockade of dopamine receptors helped slow his tics, but it also got in
the way of his enjoyment of his drumming
He would go off his medicine on the weekends to help him with
drumming
Cupid’s Disease: Natasha
Has been getting thoughts and feeling a little frisky for an old lady
She had syphilis many years ago that was left untreated which is why she was feeling
aroused
They later treated her with penicillin which lead to the problem
The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat: Dr. P
Difference between distal and proximal stimulus
Distal stimulus was his wife’s head and a hat rack (he got them mixed up)
Perceived his wife’s head was his hat and grabbed it as if he were gonna put it on
Whatever was going on inside him (proximally) was out of touch with
what was going on in the real world (distally)
Did Dr. P have a sensory disorder or a perception disorder?
Perceptual disorder
Nothing wrong with how he sees
Light still goes to his occipital lobe and he can still see stuff
He can still taste and move around, all his senses work fine
